Duḥṣanta–Śakuntalā: Gandharva Marriage and Succession Condition
जामदग्न्येन रामेण सर्वास्त्रिविदुषां वर: । योब्युध्यत महातेजा भार्गवेण महात्मना
Vaiśampāyana uvāca | Jāmadagnyena Rāmeṇa sarvāstraviduṣāṃ varaḥ | yo 'bhyudyata mahātejā Bhārgaveṇa mahātmanā ||
ヴァイシャンパーヤナは語った。「大いなる威光を備え、武器の学に通じる者の中で最も優れたビーシュマは、ジャマダグニの子ラーマ(パラシュラーマ)――大魂のバールガヴァ――と戦うため立ち上がった。」
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Even the greatest mastery of arms is secondary to the moral pressures that drive conflict: vows, duty, and lineage-based obligations can compel confrontation, and the narrative invites reflection on how dharma is tested when righteous intentions collide.
Vaiśampāyana describes Bhīṣma, famed as the foremost knower of weapons, advancing to fight Paraśurāma (Rāma Jāmadagnya), the Bhārgava warrior-sage—introducing their celebrated martial encounter.
