Jaratkāru’s Marital Compact and Departure
tato yaśaḥ pradīptaṃ te triṣu lokeṣu viśrutam niraṃśur iva gharmāśur antardhānam ito vrajet
Fame and moral standing are not permanent possessions; they endure only when one fulfills one’s undertaking with steadfast effort. Failure in a duty-bound task can cause even widely celebrated renown to vanish.
Kāśyapa warns his addressee that if the intended endeavor is not successfully completed, the person’s already-bright, world-renowned fame will disappear from this world—illustrated through the simile of the sun’s heat becoming ineffective when it is without rays.
