Droṇa’s Ācārya-Dakṣiṇā: Capture of Drupada and Division of Pāñcāla (द्रोण-आचार्यदक्षिणा)
taṃ tu suptaṃ purodyāne gaṅgāyāṃ prakṣipāmahe | atha tasmād avarajaṃ śreṣṭhaṃ caiva yudhiṣṭhiram |
The passage highlights adharma in the form of deceitful violence and unlawful seizure of power. It frames Duryodhana’s intent—harming a sleeping rival and imprisoning rightful heirs—as ethically corrupt, driven by envy and ambition rather than righteous competition.
A plan is voiced to exploit Bhīma’s sleep in the royal garden, carry him off, and throw him into the Gaṅgā. After removing Bhīma, the conspirators intend to confine Arjuna and Yudhiṣṭhira so that Duryodhana can rule unopposed; he then continually looks for a chance to execute this harm.
