Lord Vishnu (in discourse to Garuda/Vinata-putra)

Afterlife Stage: Pretayoni

Concept: Rebirth (dehāntara) may occur immediately or after an interval; both accounts can be harmonized without contradiction.

Vedantic Theme: Samanvaya (reconciliation) of scriptural statements; subtle-body continuity allows variable timing based on karma, residual tendencies, and intervening states.

Application: When teachings seem inconsistent, seek a higher-level synthesis; avoid rigid literalism; hold multiple valid models when they address different conditions.

Primary Rasa: shanta

FAQs

This verse clarifies that both possibilities are valid: the jīva may assume a new body at once or after an interval, depending on karmic conditions and the post-death process described in the Preta Kanda.

It reconciles two descriptions of post-death movement—instant transition and delayed transition—implying that the soul’s journey is not uniform for all and can vary according to karma and the state of departure.

Live with awareness that actions have immediate and long-term consequences; support ethical living and, where relevant to one’s tradition, perform death-related rites with sincerity, recognizing that post-death outcomes may vary by karma.
