Śrī Kṛṣṇa (as the narrator/teacher in dialogue)
Concept: Buddhi is ‘wife’ in two forms: corrupt (dūṣṭā) and pure/noble (suṣṭhu-rūpā); one must align with the noble buddhi.
Vedantic Theme: Purification of antaḥkaraṇa; sattvic buddhi as the instrument for right knowledge and liberation; rejection of tamasic/rajasic distortion.
Application: Cultivate suṣṭhu-buddhi through truthfulness, study, reflection, and devotion; notice and correct dūṣṭa-buddhi patterns (rationalization, envy, cruelty, hypocrisy).
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 3.28.81 (loss of discernment causes repeated wrong acceptance); Garuda Purana 3.28.83-84 (two wives metaphor introduced and queried)
This verse frames intellect as dual: a corrupt, misleading discernment and a pure, well-formed discernment—highlighting that spiritual progress depends on choosing and cultivating su-buddhi (right understanding).
In Garuda Purana’s broader ethical framework, the quality of one’s buddhi shapes karma and choices; pure discernment supports dharma and beneficial actions, while corrupt discernment leads to harmful karma that affects post-death consequences.
Before acting, test decisions for clarity, compassion, and dharma; treat impulsive, self-justifying thoughts as ‘duṣṭa-buddhi’ and strengthen ‘su-buddhi’ through study, self-restraint, and truthful living.
