Ajāmila Delivered: Viṣṇudūtas Establish the Supremacy of the Holy Name
म्रियमाणो हरेर्नाम गृणन् पुत्रोपचारितम् । अजामिलोऽप्यगाद्धाम किमुत श्रद्धया गृणन् ॥ ४९ ॥
mriyamāṇo harer nāma gṛṇan putropacāritam ajāmilo ’py agād dhāma kim uta śraddhayā gṛṇan
At the time of death one is certainly bewildered because his bodily functions are in disorder. At that time, even one who throughout his life has practiced chanting the holy name of the Lord may not be able to chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra very distinctly. Nevertheless, such a person receives all the benefits of chanting the holy name. While the body is fit therefore, why should we not chant the holy name of the Lord loudly and distinctly? If one does so, it is quite possible that even at the time of death he will be properly able to chant the holy name of the Lord with love and faith. In conclusion, one who chants the holy name of the Lord constantly is guaranteed to return home, back to Godhead, without a doubt.
This verse teaches that even accidental utterance of Hari’s name at death benefited Ajāmila; therefore chanting with faith is even more powerful for attaining the Lord’s abode.
Because the sound of Hari’s name is spiritually potent; Ajāmila uttered the name (though as a son’s address), and that contact with nāma brought divine benefit—showing the extraordinary mercy of the holy name.
Make daily chanting of the Lord’s names a steady practice with faith, so remembrance becomes natural—especially in difficult moments—leading the mind toward devotion and liberation.
