अगस्त्यस्य वित्तयाचनं तथा इल्वलोपभिक्षणनिर्णयः

Agastya’s request for wealth and the decision to seek resources from Ilvala

bharatanandana! rājā vidarbhaḥ tasyāḥ kanyāyā utpanneva harṣeṇa pūrṇaḥ brāhmaṇān etat śubhaṃ saṃvādaṃ śrāvayām āsa. abhyānandanta tāṃ sarve brāhmaṇā vasudhādhipa; lopāmudreti tasyāś ca cakrire nāma te dvijāḥ.

O scion of Bharata, as soon as the princess was born, the king of Vidarbha—filled with joy—announced this auspicious news to the Brahmins. All the Brahmins blessed and celebrated the newborn girl, and those twice-born men bestowed upon her the name “Lopāmudrā.” The scene underscores the cultural ethic that a child’s arrival is sanctified through communal benediction and the conferral of a meaningful name by learned elders.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights a dharmic social ideal: major life events—especially birth—are affirmed through auspicious speech, communal blessing, and the guidance of learned elders. Naming is presented as a sanctifying act that integrates the child into a moral and cultural order.

A daughter is born to the king of Vidarbha. Overjoyed, he shares the good news with the Brahmins, who congratulate and bless the child and formally give her the name Lopāmudrā.
