Agastya and Vātāpi: Ilvala’s stratagem; Lopāmudrā’s emergence
tīrthāni devā viviśur nāviśan bhāratāsurāḥ | tān adharmakṛto darpaḥ pūrvam eva samāviśat, bharatanandana ||
The gods entered the sacred fords to bathe, but the Asuras did not enter them. For pride born of unrighteousness had already taken hold of those Asuras beforehand, O delight of the Bharatas. The verse contrasts reverent approach to holy places with the moral blindness that keeps the arrogant from seeking purification.
