Agastya and Vātāpi: Ilvala’s stratagem; Lopāmudrā’s emergence

Then Kali, too, entered the Daityas and Dānavas. Overpowered by Alakṣmī (misfortune), those Dānavas were struck down by Kali. The passage underscores an ethical sequence: when shame, restraint, and right conduct are abandoned, prosperity and the support of dharma depart; misfortune takes hold, pride and arrogance corrupt the mind, and the destructive force of Kali finds entry—leading swiftly to ruin.

Educational Q&A

When modesty, self-restraint, and righteous conduct are abandoned, prosperity (Lakṣmī) and the protection of dharma withdraw; misfortune (Alakṣmī) takes over, pride clouds discernment, and Kali—symbolizing discord and degeneration—gains entry, culminating in destruction.

The text describes the Daityas and Dānavas becoming possessed by Alakṣmī; in that weakened, corrupted state Kali enters them, and they are consequently ‘struck down’—a narrative depiction of their rapid downfall following ethical collapse.
