Yudhiṣṭhira’s Rationale for Sending Arjuna and Request to Dhaumya

Ghūlastya said: “By fasting, a person surely attains the desires he seeks—there is no doubt of it. Thereafter, having gone to Vāmana-tīrtha, which releases one from all sins, one should proceed onward (in pilgrimage).” The passage situates religious discipline (upavāsa) and tīrtha-yātrā as ethical means of inner purification and the fulfillment of rightful aims, emphasizing faith, restraint, and the cleansing of wrongdoing through devotion and sacred travel.

Educational Q&A

Religious discipline—especially fasting—combined with pilgrimage to purifying sacred sites is presented as a reliable means to fulfill worthy aims and to cleanse moral faults; the verse underscores certainty (na saṁśayaḥ) in the efficacy of such dharmic observances.

A speaker (Ghūlastya) is describing the fruits of specific vows and pilgrimage steps: first the assured benefit of fasting for attaining desired outcomes, and then the instruction to proceed to Vāmana-tīrtha, characterized as a place that removes all sins.
