Tīrtha-yātrā: Phalaśruti and Sacred Geography from Lohitya to Prayāga
Pulastya’s Instruction
दान॑ वाप्युपवासो वा सहस्रगुणितं भवेत् । धर्मज्ञ! तदनन्तर वहाँसे शतसहस्र और साहस्रक-तीर्थोंकी यात्रा करे। वे दोनों लोकविख्यात तीर्थ हैं। उनमें स्नान करनेसे मनुष्यको सहस्र गोदानका फल प्राप्त होता है। वहाँ किये हुए दान अथवा उपवासका महत्त्व अन्यत्रसे सहस्रगुना अधिक है || १५७-१५८ ई || ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र रेणुकातीर्थमुत्तमम्,राजेन्द्र! वहाँसे उत्तम रेणुकातीर्थकी यात्रा करे। पहले उस तीर्थमें स्नान करे; फिर देवताओं और पितरोंकी पूजामें तत्पर हो जाय। उससे तीर्थयात्री सब पापोंसे शुद्ध हो अग्निष्टोमयज्ञका फल पाता है
dānaṃ vāpy upavāso vā sahasraguṇitaṃ bhavet | dharmajña! tad-anantaraṃ vāhāsa-śata-sahasra-sāhasraka-tīrthayoḥ yātrāṃ kuryāt | te ubhau loka-vikhyātau tīrthau | tayoḥ snānena manuṣyāya sahasra-go-dāna-phalaṃ prāpyate | tatra kṛtaṃ dānam athavā upavāsaḥ anyatra kṛtāt sahasraguṇaṃ mahattaraṃ bhavati || tato gacchet rājendra reṇukā-tīrtham uttamam | pūrvaṃ tatra snātvā devatā-pitṛ-pūjāyāṃ tatparaḥ syāt | tena tīrtha-yātrī sarva-pāpaiḥ śuddhaḥ agniṣṭoma-yajña-phalaṃ prāpnoti |
Ghūlastya said: “Whether one gives in charity or undertakes a fast, its merit becomes a thousandfold. O knower of dharma, thereafter one should journey to the famed sacred fords known as Vāhāsa, Śata-sahasra, and Sāhasraka—tīrthas celebrated throughout the world. By bathing there a person gains the fruit of a thousand gifts of cows; and any charity or fasting performed there carries a thousand times greater significance than elsewhere. Then, O best of kings, one should proceed to the excellent Reṇukā-tīrtha. First bathe in that ford, and then devote oneself to worship of the gods and the ancestors. By this, the pilgrim is purified of all sins and attains the merit of an Agniṣṭoma sacrifice.”
