Ghulastya said: “Having reached the sacred ford called Pṛthivī-tīrtha, one gains the merit equal to gifting a thousand cows. Then, O king, the pilgrim who serves the tīrthas should go to Śālūkinī; by bathing at the Daśāśvamedha-tīrtha there, he becomes a sharer in that same merit. Going on to Sarpadevī and reverently resorting to the excellent Nāga-tīrtha, a man attains the fruit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice and proceeds to the world of the Nāgas. O knower of dharma, from there he should go to the gatekeeper named Tarantuka; by staying there for a single night, one again gains the fruit of a thousand cow-gifts. Then, observing discipline and regulated food, he should go to the Pañcanada-tīrtha and bathe at the Koṭi-tīrtha; by this he obtains the fruit of an Aśvamedha. Bathing at the Aśvinī-tīrtha, a man becomes endowed with beauty.”
घुलस्त्य उवाच
The passage teaches that disciplined pilgrimage—approaching tīrthas with restraint, regulated living, and reverence—yields spiritual merit comparable to major gifts and Vedic sacrifices, emphasizing ethical self-control as integral to religious practice.
A speaker named Ghulastya guides the king through a sequence of sacred sites, describing the specific fruits (phala) gained by bathing or staying at each tīrtha—ranging from the merit of cow-gifts and Aśvamedhas to attaining the Nāga realm and personal beauty.
