Adhyāya 76: Kuṇḍina-praveśaḥ, Bhīmena satkāraḥ, Ṛtuparṇa-kṣamā, Aśvahṛdaya-pratyarpanam
Nala’s Reception and Reconciliation
सा वै पित्राभ्यनुज्ञाता मात्रा च भरतर्षभ । नलं॑ प्रवेशयामास यत्र तस्या: प्रतिश्रय:,भरतकुलभूषण! पिता और माताकी आज्ञा ले दमयन्तीने नलको राजभवनके भीतर जहाँ वह स्वयं रहती थी, बुलवाया। दमयन्तीको सहसा सामने उपस्थित देख राजा नल शोक और दु:खसे व्याप्त हो नेत्रोंसे आँसू बहाने लगे
sā vai pitrābhyanujñātā mātrā ca bharatarṣabha | nalaṁ praveśayāmāsa yatra tasyāḥ pratiśrayaḥ ||
Bṛhadaśva said: Having obtained the consent of her father and her mother, O bull of the Bharata line, Damayantī had Nala brought inside the royal residence, to the place where she herself dwelt. The scene underscores her dutiful regard for parental authority even in personal matters, and her compassionate resolve to meet Nala with propriety rather than impulse.
बृहदश्चव उवाच
Even in moments of intense personal emotion, Damayantī acts within dharma: she seeks her parents’ approval and proceeds with decorum. The verse highlights ethical restraint, respect for elders, and compassionate responsibility in relationships.
Damayantī, after obtaining permission from her father and mother, arranges for Nala to be brought into the inner royal residence—specifically to the place where she stays—setting the stage for their emotionally charged meeting.
