Nala’s Reception and Reconciliation
bhaimīm api nalo rājā bhrājamāno yathā purā | sasvaje svasutau cāpi yathāvat pratyānandat ||
King Nala, radiant as he had been before, embraced Bhīmī (Damayantī) as well. He also clasped his own two children, and in due measure—befitting the moment and propriety—he rejoiced and expressed his joy. The scene underscores the restoration of rightful bonds: the king’s return to his family is marked not by excess, but by fitting affection and self-possessed happiness.
The verse highlights dharmic restoration through measured affection: when order returns after suffering, one should honor relationships with propriety (yathāvat) and self-possessed joy rather than uncontrolled display.
Bṛhadaśva describes Nala’s renewed splendor and his reunion with Damayantī and their two children—embracing them and rejoicing appropriately, signaling the healing of the family after separation.
