Bṛhadaśva said: “O King, following this plan, a Brahmin named Parṇāda went to the city of Ayodhyā and entered King Ṛtupārṇa’s palace. He conveyed my message there, and he returned bringing back your reply exactly as it was given. O ruler of Niṣadha, after that I devised this means to bring you here—by announcing to Ṛtupārṇa the news of a svayaṃvara said to be taking place the very next day.”

Educational Q&A

The passage highlights prudent means (upāya) used in service of a rightful goal: careful communication, accurate reporting, and strategic planning can support dharma when aimed at restoring what is just rather than deceiving for selfish ends.

Bṛhadaśva explains that a Brahmin messenger, Parṇāda, went to Ayodhyā to deliver a message to King Ṛtupārṇa and returned with the exact reply. Then Bṛhadaśva devised a further strategy to bring the Naiṣadha king (Nala) by spreading news of an imminent svayaṃvara to draw Ṛtupārṇa into action.
