Damayantī’s Oath and Vāyu’s Testimony

bṛhadaśva uvāca | mithunaṃ preṣayāmāsa keśinyā saha bhārata | indrasenāṃ saha bhrātrā samabhijñāya bāhukaḥ ||

Bṛhadaśva said: “O Bhārata, she sent the pair of children along with Keśinī. Bāhuka, recognizing Indrasenā together with her brother Indrasena, rushed forward, clasped them to his chest, and took them onto his lap. On obtaining those beautiful children, like the sons of the gods, Niṣadha’s king Nala was overwhelmed with grief and wept aloud. After repeatedly betraying the turmoil of his heart, he suddenly released the children and spoke to Keśinī.”

Educational Q&A

Even when dharma is obscured by misfortune and disguise, deep familial bonds and compassion persist; the verse highlights the ethical weight of separation, the truth of identity, and the human cost of suffering.

Damayantī sends her two children with Keśinī to Bāhuka; Bāhuka (Nala in disguise) recognizes them as his own, embraces them, breaks down in grief, then composes himself enough to address Keśinī.
