Educational Q&A

The verse highlights inner discernment and dharmic suitability in marriage: the choice of a spouse is grounded not in birthplace or outward status, but in character and fitness (anurūpatā), affirmed as an inward vow (‘chosen in the heart’).

In Mārkaṇḍeya’s narration of the Sāvitrī–Satyavān episode, Satyavān is identified: though born in a city, he was raised in a forest hermitage, and he is declared to be the one chosen as husband.
