Adhyāya 290: Kuntī’s Mantra-Parīkṣā and the Appearance of Sūrya (कुन्ती–सूर्यसंवादः)

vivyādha sarvagātreṣu lakṣmaṇaṃ ca mahābalam | tata indrājitena bhagavān śrīrāmaḥ tathā mahābalī lakṣmaṇaḥ sampūrṇāṅgān devatābhyo varadānarūpeṇa prāptaiḥ bāṇaiḥ kṣata-vikṣataḥ kṛtaḥ |

Mārkaṇḍeya said: Indrajit pierced the mighty Lakṣmaṇa in all his limbs. Then, with arrows obtained as boons from the gods, he grievously wounded and mangled both the revered Śrī Rāma and the powerful Lakṣmaṇa. The episode underscores how even the righteous may be struck by divinely empowered force, yet are tested to remain steadfast in courage and dharma amid adversity.

Educational Q&A

Even those aligned with dharma can face severe, seemingly overwhelming harm; the ethical emphasis is on steadfastness, courage, and perseverance when confronted by power backed by divine boons.

Indrajit strikes Lakṣmaṇa across his entire body and then, using arrows granted by the gods, inflicts grievous wounds on both Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa.
