Sūrya’s Counsel to Karṇa on Indra’s Intended Request

Kuṇḍala–Kavaca Discourse

tataḥ pitaram āviśya puplave'haṃ mahārṇavam | śatayojanavistīrṇaṃ nihatya jalarākṣasīm ||

Then, entering into my father’s form—becoming one with Vāyu—I leapt across the vast ocean, a hundred yojanas in breadth. In those waters there dwelt a rākṣasī who sought to obstruct my passage; when she became an impediment to the task, I struck her down. The episode presents resolve and resourcefulness in the face of an impassable barrier, while also raising the ethical frame that force is employed specifically to remove a direct, active obstruction to a necessary journey.
