Sāvitrī’s Dialogue with Yama and the Restoration of Satyavān

Mārkaṇḍeya said: “When, in the midst of their combat, no distinguishing mark could be seen between the two, Hanumān then placed a garland upon Sugrīva’s neck, so that he might be recognized.” The episode underscores the ethical need for discernment in conflict: even in a righteous cause, one must avoid harming the ally through confusion and must take practical steps to protect dharma from error.

Even in justified conflict, right action requires clear discernment; practical measures should be taken to prevent accidental harm to allies and to keep one’s conduct aligned with dharma.
During a fight where the two combatants looked indistinguishable, Hanumān puts a garland on Sugrīva’s neck so that Sugrīva can be recognized amid the confusion of battle.
