Chapter 270: Slaying of Prahasta; Defeat of Dhūmrākṣa; Awakening of Kumbhakarṇa
यथा वदत्येष विहीनयोनि: शालावृको वाममुपेत्य पार्श्चम् । सुव्यक्तमस्मानवमन्य पापै: कृतो$भिमर्द: कुरुभि: प्रसह,“यह नीच योनिका गीदड़, जो हमलोगोंके वामभागसे होकर निकला है, जैसा शब्द कर रहा है, उससे स्पष्ट जान पड़ता है कि पापी कौरवोंने यहाँ आकर हमारी अवहेलना करते हुए हठपूर्वक भारी संहार मचा रखा है”
yathā vadaty eṣa vihīnayoniḥ śālāvṛko vāmam upetya pārśvam | suvyaktam asmān avamanya pāpaiḥ kṛto 'bhimardaḥ kurubhiḥ prasaha ||
Vaiśampāyana said: “Just as this jackal of base birth, passing along our left side, is crying out, it is plainly evident that the sinful Kauravas have come here and, scorning us, have forcibly caused a great slaughter.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights the epic’s moral logic that adharma manifests not only in actions (contempt and violence) but also in the world’s signs: inauspicious omens are read as warnings that wrongdoing—here, the Kauravas’ coercive aggression—brings destructive consequences.
A jackal passes on the left side and cries—an inauspicious portent. Interpreting this, the speaker concludes that the Kauravas have arrived, have shown contempt, and have forcibly unleashed severe destruction/slaughter.
