Durvāsā said: “They are ever devoted to right conduct and always take Vāsudeva as their highest refuge. If they become enraged, they could burn us to ashes—like fire consuming a heap of cotton. Therefore, disciples, without even asking them, flee at once.”
दुर्वाया उवाच
True strength is grounded in dharma and devotion: those who are steadfast in right conduct and take Vāsudeva as their supreme refuge are portrayed as spiritually formidable, so that even powerful ascetics fear the moral and divine force that protects such devotees.
Durvāsā warns his disciples that the (contextually implied) Pāṇḍavas are unwavering in good conduct and devoted to Vāsudeva; if angered, they could destroy the visitors as easily as fire consumes cotton. He therefore urges immediate flight without even seeking the Pāṇḍavas’ permission.
