Educational Q&A

Even amid hostility, dharma can require restraint and protection of kin: Arjuna urges the release of Duryodhana not out of approval, but because family bonds and Yudhiṣṭhira’s righteous directive should not be violated, and because humiliating a fallen foe can be ethically improper.

In the Vana Parva episode where Gandharvas confront the Kauravas, Arjuna addresses Chitrasena and requests that Duryodhana (Suyodhana) be released, citing that he is their brother and invoking Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira’s message as the guiding instruction.
