Vaiśampāyana said: “When you hear the voice of your husband as he arrives at the doorway, rise at once and stand waiting within the house. When you see that he has entered, promptly honor him in due form—offering him a seat and water for washing his feet.”

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches gṛhastha-dharma: prompt, respectful reception of the household’s head (and, by extension, any honored guest) through attentive greeting and traditional offerings such as a seat and pādya (water for washing the feet).

A set of instructions is being given about proper conduct at home: on hearing the husband’s voice at the door, one should rise, wait ready inside, and upon his entry immediately perform courteous reception with āsana and pādya.
