Mārkaṇḍeya said: “Even before you were born, the Self-born Brahmā had already designated this maiden as your wife. Therefore, take her hand in the proper rite, with Vedic mantras placed foremost.” The passage frames marriage not as a private impulse but as a dharmic act performed according to ordained procedure and sacred speech, emphasizing legitimacy, responsibility, and social-cosmic order.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights that key life-commitments like marriage are to be undertaken as dharmic obligations—legitimized by proper procedure (vidhi) and sanctified speech (mantra)—rather than merely by personal desire.

Mārkaṇḍeya reports that Brahmā had already destined a particular maiden to be the hero’s wife even before his birth, and therefore instructs that her hand should be taken through the formal rite with mantras, establishing the union as lawful and ritually complete.
