Adhyāya 22: Śālva’s Weapon-Shower, Dāruka’s Wounding, and the Māyā-Report of Vasudeva’s Father

Vāyu said: “Even if an enemy were merely seated at home upon his seat—one who does not even wish to fight—he should still not be spared when his destruction is required; how much more, then, one who stands ready in battle. Therefore, O tiger among men, O lord, exert every effort and strike down this foe.”

Educational Q&A

The verse frames a hard-edged nīti principle: when a foe is truly an enemy and poses danger, one should not hesitate out of misplaced softness—especially when the enemy is openly prepared for battle. It emphasizes decisive action aligned with a warrior’s duty rather than sentimental restraint.

Vāyu addresses a heroic figure (called ‘tiger among men’) and urges him to destroy ‘this enemy’ with full effort, arguing that if even a non-combatant enemy at home should not be spared in such a context, then an enemy standing in battle certainly should be struck down.
