अग्निवंशवर्णनम् (Agni-vaṃśa-varṇana) / The Genealogy and Function of Agni

तपोमूलमिदं सर्व यन्मां विप्रानुपृच्छसि । इन्द्रियाण्येव संयम्य तपो भवति नान्यथा,विप्रवर! आप मुझसे जो कुछ पूछते हैं, उसके उत्तरमें मैं यह बता रहा हूँ कि इस सबका मूल तप है। इन्द्रियोंका संयम करनेसे ही वह तपस्या सम्पन्न होती है, और किसी प्रकारसे नहीं

tapomūlam idaṃ sarvaṃ yan māṃ viprānupṛcchasi | indriyāṇy eva saṃyamya tapo bhavati nānyathā, vipravara |

The hunter said: “O best of brahmins, whatever you are asking me about—its entire foundation is austerity (tapas). That austerity is truly accomplished only by restraining the senses; it is not attained in any other way.”
