The hunter-sage explains that, together with the five sense-faculties and the inner self (as the principle that experiences), and with the three qualities—sattva, rajas, and tamas—this makes a collection of seventeen principles. This aggregate is designated as the ‘Unmanifest’ (avyakta), indicating the subtle ground from which manifest experience and conduct arise.
