Guṇa-vibhāga and Prāṇa–Agni–Yoga Upadeśa (गुणविभाग तथा प्राण-अग्नि-योगोपदेश)
सर्वे विद्यासु निष्णाता बलवन्तो दुरासदा: । कुवलाश्चश्व पितृतो गुणैरभ्यधिको5भवत्,वे सब-के-सब सम्पूर्ण विद्याओंमें पारंगत, बलवान् और दुर्धर्ष वीर थे। कुवलाश्व उत्तम गुणोंमें अपने पितासे बढ़कर निकले
sarve vidyāsu niṣṇātā balavanto durāsadāḥ | kuvalāśvaś ca pitr̥to guṇair abhyadhiko 'bhavat ||
Markandeya said: “All of them were thoroughly accomplished in every branch of learning—strong, formidable, and hard to overcome. And Kuvalāśva, in excellence of character and virtues, surpassed even his father.”
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
True eminence is measured not only by strength and learning but by guṇa—ethical and personal excellence. The verse praises mastery of knowledge and valor, yet highlights that surpassing one’s predecessor in virtues is the higher distinction.
Mārkaṇḍeya is describing a group of formidable, well-educated heroes, and then singles out Kuvalāśva as exceptional—stating that he exceeded his own father in admirable qualities.
