Indradyumna Upākhyāna: On Kīrti, Smṛti, and Restoration
ekāhāryaṁ yugaṁ sarvaṁ lobhamohavyavasthitam | adharmo varddhate tatra na tu dharmaḥ pravartate ||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: “In that age, everyone will become fixed in greed and delusion, living on a single indiscriminate meal. There, unrighteousness will grow, while righteousness will not find any footing or active practice.”
When society becomes governed by greed and delusion, ethical discernment collapses; adharma naturally expands, and dharma ceases to function as a lived practice.
Mārkaṇḍeya is describing the characteristics of a deteriorating age (a yuga of decline), forecasting a social condition where people’s conduct becomes morally confused and unrighteousness predominates.
