The Vāmadeva Horses Episode and the Ethics of Promise
ākhyātaste mayā cātmā durjeyo hi surāsuraiḥ, brahmarṣe |
The Deity said: “I have now declared to you My own true nature. Indeed, it is hard to comprehend—even for gods and demons. Therefore, O brahmarṣi, until the great ascetic Lord Brahmā awakens, you should continue to move about at ease, sustained by faith and trust.”
The verse emphasizes that the divine Self/nature is profoundly difficult to grasp—even for celestial beings—and advises the sage to live steadily with śraddhā (reverent faith) and viśvāsa (trust) while awaiting the proper cosmic moment (Brahmā’s awakening).
A deity concludes an instruction to a brahmarṣi, stating that the deity’s true nature has been revealed, and then gives practical guidance: until Brahmā awakens, the sage should continue to wander or live calmly, grounded in faith and confidence.
