The Vāmadeva Horses Episode and the Ethics of Promise
tadāhaṃ samprasūyāmi gṛheṣu śubhakarmaṇām | praviṣṭo mānuṣaṃ dehaṃ sarvaṃ praśamayāmy aham ||
Therefore, I manifest myself—taking birth in the households of the virtuous. Entering a human body, I quell every disturbance, bringing all turmoil to peace. (In context: whenever dharma declines and adharma rises, and when violent demons and fearsome rākṣasas become oppressive, the Divine appears among righteous people to restore order and protect the world.)
The verse teaches that the Divine does not remain indifferent when disorder and oppression prevail: to protect the virtuous and restore dharma, the Divine may manifest in human form and pacify destructive forces.
The Divine speaker explains the mode and purpose of manifestation: taking birth among righteous households, entering a human body, and calming the world’s upheavals—especially those caused by violent, oppressive beings.
