वैशम्पायन उवाच
This verse primarily establishes the authority of the forthcoming teaching: Mārkaṇḍeya is presented as a venerable, ascetic, and fully learned sage, implying that his response will be grounded in dharma, disciplined practice (tapas), and comprehensive scriptural understanding.
After someone has spoken (addressed him), the narrator Vaiśampāyana reports that the sage Mārkaṇḍeya now begins his reply. The verse functions as a transition into Mārkaṇḍeya’s discourse.
