Educational Q&A

The verse praises an ideal of kṣatriya upbringing: skill in martial discipline (dhanuḥ-veda) must be joined with suśīlatā (good character) and steady adherence to dharma as modeled by the virtuous (sadbhiḥ ācaritam). Competence is framed as ethical competence, sustained by good company (suhṛt-saṅga).

In Vaiśampāyana’s narration, Draupadī (addressed as Kṛṣṇā/Yājñasenī) is being spoken to with reassurance and praise: her sons are described as well-behaved, devoted to archery, and living according to righteous conduct in the company of friends.
