Indra’s Meeting with the Pāṇḍavas
dhaneśvara! tvayā dṛṣṭvā dṛṣṭvā mamaivaṃ tiraskṛtaṃ duṣṭātmanā sakhyā avajñāya; tasya phalena eṣa ekaḥ puruṣaḥ sarvaiḥ sainyaiḥ saha ekasya puruṣasya hastena hataḥ bhaviṣyati. tava buddhiḥ khoṭī jātā; ataḥ sarveṣāṃ sainyānāṃ nihateṣu teṣāṃ kṛte duḥkham anubhūya punar eva taṃ puruṣaṃ darśayitvā mama śāpāt pāpāc ca vimokṣyase. sainyānāṃ tu tava eteṣāṃ putra-pautra-balānvitānāṃ yaḥ tava ājñāṃ kariṣyati sa ghoraṃ śāpaṃ na prāpsyati.
“Dhaneśvara! Your wicked-hearted companion has insulted me in your very presence, disregarding me and treating me with contempt. As the fruit of that act, this man will be slain by the hand of a single person, along with all these soldiers. Your judgment has become perverted; therefore, after you have endured grief for these soldiers when they are killed, you will again behold that very man and be freed from my curse and from sin. Yet among these troops—strengthened by sons, grandsons, and their fighting power—whoever obeys your command will not be touched by this dreadful curse.”
