Kubera’s Arrival and the Disclosure of Agastya’s Curse

Vaiśaṃpāyana–Janamejaya Narrative

Vaiśampāyana said: Again and again, gaping his mouth and licking the corners of his lips, he rushed forward in fury—just as Bali once charged at Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt. The scene signals the onset of a decisive clash: wrath flares, bodies tense for combat, and the comparison to Bali and Indra frames the encounter as a contest of overpowering force against established might, where pride and rage drive the combatants toward violent consequence.

Educational Q&A

Unchecked anger and pride propel one into destructive action; the verse highlights how fury manifests physically and drives rash aggression, warning that such impulses escalate conflict and invite grave consequences.

A combatant (described through repeated gaping and licking of the mouth-corners) charges forward in rage. The poet compares this charge to the famed mythic moment when Bali attacked Indra, intensifying the sense of imminent, high-stakes battle.
