Bhīmasena–Hanūmān Saṃvāda: The Tail Test and the Divine Path

Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Then the wise Bhīmasena—mighty, broad-armed, and of keen understanding—saw the best of monkeys, Hanūmān, of विशाल stature and great strength, standing alone like the Himālaya itself, blocking the path that led heavenward. Fearless and impelled by speed, Bhīma strode up to him and let out a terrifying lion-roar, like the rumble of a thunderbolt. At that roar, the beasts and birds of the forest trembled in alarm. The scene sets strength against strength, yet hints that true greatness will be measured not merely by force but by restraint, recognition, and right conduct toward a superior being.

Educational Q&A

Power alone is not the final measure of greatness. Bhīma’s fearless display of strength is set against Hanūmān’s immovable, mountain-like presence, preparing the lesson that true dharma includes humility, discernment of who is worthy of reverence, and restraint before a superior—even when one is strong.

In the great forest, Bhīma sees the gigantic and powerful monkey-king Hanūmān standing alone and blocking the heavenward path. Bhīma approaches rapidly and roars like a lion, frightening the animals and birds, initiating a charged encounter that will test Bhīma’s pride and reveal Hanūmān’s stature.
