Ghaṭotkaca said: “That hermitage was free from darkness and filled with sanctity. Because of the dense growth of trees, the sun’s rays could not touch it. It was untouched by the afflictions of hunger and thirst, cold and heat, and it served to dispel every sorrow.”

A truly sacred refuge is characterized not merely by physical seclusion but by the removal of afflictions—darkness, discomfort, and grief—suggesting that holiness is measured by its power to calm suffering and restore inner clarity.
Ghaṭotkaca describes an exceptionally serene hermitage: shaded so densely that even the sun’s rays do not reach it, and portrayed as a place beyond ordinary hardships like hunger, thirst, cold, and heat—thereby functioning as a grief-dispelling sanctuary.
