Svargārohaṇa-parva Adhyāya 5 — Karmaphala-Nirdeśa and Phalāśruti (कर्मफलनिर्देशः फलश्रुतिश्च)
ये चान्ये कीर्तिता वीरा राजानो दीप्तमूर्तय: । स्वर्गे काल॑ कियन्तं ते तस्थुस्तदपि शंस मे
ye cānye kīrtitā vīrā rājāno dīptamūrtayaḥ | svarge kālaṃ kiyantaṃ te tasthus tad api śaṃsa me ||
Janamejaya asked: “And those other heroic kings of radiant splendor who have been mentioned—how long did they remain in heaven? Tell me that as well.”
जनमेजय उवाच
The verse highlights a key Mahābhārata concern: heavenly reward is connected to merit and has a measurable duration. Janamejaya’s question frames Svarga not as an absolute end, but as a state whose length depends on one’s deeds.
In Svargārohaṇa Parva, Janamejaya continues questioning the narrator about the posthumous fate of renowned warriors and kings. Here he asks specifically how long the other illustrious kings stayed in heaven.
