Vaiśaṃpāyana said: “You did not heed the firm counsel spoken by those who advised you. O king, when your son Duryodhana, intoxicated by the pride of youth, began to act according to his own will, you paid no attention to the words of well-wishing friends who spoke for your good. Indeed, a greedy man, craving the fruits of gain, accomplishes no true good—neither for others nor even for himself.”

Educational Q&A

A ruler must heed firm, welfare-oriented counsel; ignoring well-wishers and indulging a greedy, reward-obsessed mindset leads to the loss of true self-interest and public good.

Vaiśaṃpāyana rebukes the king for failing to restrain Duryodhana when he became arrogant in youth and began acting arbitrarily, and for disregarding the advice of friends who spoke for the kingdom’s welfare.
