नानाविचित्रवेषाश्न नानाभाषास्तथैव च । एते चान्ये च बहवो गणा: शत्रुभयंकरा:
nānāvicitraveṣāś ca nānābhāṣās tathaiva ca | ete cānye ca bahavo gaṇāḥ śatrubhayankarāḥ ||
Vaiśampāyana said: “They wore many kinds of strange and varied disguises, and they spoke in many different tongues as well. These—and many other such bands—were terrifying to the enemy.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
In war narratives, the text highlights how outward appearance, language, and coordinated group presence can shape morale and fear. It implicitly points to the ethical weight of psychological intimidation as a real force on the battlefield, alongside physical strength.
Vaiśampāyana describes various bands or troops characterized by unusual attire/disguises and many languages. Their diversity and intimidating presentation are emphasized as making them frightening to opposing forces.
