Adhyāya 33: Rauhiṇeya (Balarāma) is welcomed and takes his seat to witness the gadā-engagement
अहं सुयोधनं संख्ये हनिष्यामि न संशय:
ahaṃ suyodhanaṃ saṅkhye haniṣyāmi na saṃśayaḥ
Bhīmasena declares with unwavering resolve that on the battlefield he will kill Suyodhana (Duryodhana), leaving no room for doubt. The line conveys a warrior’s vow in the climactic moral reckoning of the war, where personal enmity and the demand for justice converge into a decisive commitment to end the conflict’s chief instigator.
भीमसेन उवाच
The verse highlights steadfast resolve and the binding force of a warrior’s vow in a dharma-framed conflict: once a righteous objective is embraced in war, hesitation and doubt are cast aside, and accountability for grave wrongdoing is pursued to its end.
In the Shalya Parva’s late-war setting, Bhīma speaks directly, asserting that he will kill Suyodhana (Duryodhana) in battle. It signals the approaching culmination of Bhīma’s long-standing enmity and the Pandavas’ drive to conclude the war by defeating its principal Kaurava leader.
