Sauptika Parva, Adhyaya 8 — Dhṛṣṭadyumna-vadha and the Camp’s Nocturnal Rout

स्वप्ले सुप्तान्नयन्तीं तां रात्रिष्वन्यासु मारिष | ददृशुर्यो धमुख्यास्ते घ्नन्तं द्रौणिं च सर्वदा,माननीय नरेश! मुख्य-मुख्य योद्धा अन्य रात्रियोंमें भी सपनेमें उस कालरात्रिको देखते थे। राजन! वह सदा नाना प्रकारके केशरहित प्रेतोंको अपने पाशोंमें बाँधकर लिये जाती दिखायी देती थी, इसी प्रकार हथियार डालकर सोये हुए महारथियोंको भी लिये जाती हुई स्वप्नमें दृष्टिगोचर होती थी। वे योद्धा सबका संहार करते हुए द्रोणकुमारको भी सदा सपनोंमें देखा करते थे

sañjaya uvāca | svapne suptān nayantīṃ tāṃ rātriṣv anyāsu māriṣa | dadṛśur ye dhṛtamukhyās te ghnantaṃ drauṇiṃ ca sarvadā ||

Sañjaya said: O venerable one, even on other nights the foremost warriors repeatedly beheld in dreams that Night-of-Death carrying away sleeping men. In those visions she appeared as ever binding various shaven-headed spectres in her nooses and dragging them off; likewise she was seen taking away great chariot-fighters who had laid down their weapons and fallen asleep. And they also kept seeing, again and again in dreams, Droṇa’s son as a slayer bringing about universal destruction—an ominous forewarning of the ethical collapse that follows when vigilance and restraint are abandoned in war.
