Sauptika Parva, Adhyaya 8 — Dhṛṣṭadyumna-vadha and the Camp’s Nocturnal Rout

अभ्यजानादमेयात्मा द्रोणपुत्रं महारथम्‌ | अमेय आत्मबलसे सम्पन्न रणदुर्मद धृष्टद्युम्न उसके पैर लगते ही जाग उठा और जागते ही उसने महारथी द्रोणपुत्रको पहचान लिया,एतदीदृशकं वृत्तं राजन्‌ सुप्तजने विभो । उन पाण्डव आदिके समक्ष कौन उन्हें मार सकता था? साक्षात्‌ देवराज इन्द्र भी उस दशामें उनका कुछ नहीं बिगाड़ सकते थे। प्रभो! नरेश्वर! उस रात्रिमें सब लोगोंके सो जानेपर यह इस प्रकारकी घटना घटित हुई ।। ततो जनक्षयं कृत्वा पाण्डवानां महात्ययम्‌

sañjaya uvāca | abhyajānād ameyātmā droṇaputraṁ mahāratham | ameya-ātmabalasaṁpannaṁ raṇadurmadam | dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ pādābhyāṁ spṛṣṭaḥ prabuddhaḥ prabuddhaś ca mahārathiṇaṁ droṇaputram abhyajānāt | etādīdṛśakaṁ vṛttaṁ rājan suptajane vibho | sākṣād devarāja indro 'pi tāṁ daśāṁ prāpya teṣāṁ kiñcid api na vyakaroṣyat | prabho nareśvara tasmin rātrau sarveṣu suptyeṣv evaṁvidhā ghaṭanā samabhavat | tato janakṣayaṁ kṛtvā pāṇḍavānāṁ mahātyayam |

Sañjaya said: Dhrishtadyumna—of immeasurable spirit—was roused the moment his feet were touched, and on waking he recognized the great chariot-warrior, Drona’s son (Aśvatthāman), fierce in battle and swollen with the arrogance of war, endowed with unfathomable strength of self. O King, O mighty one, such was the event that occurred when the people lay asleep. In that condition, even Indra himself, the lord of the gods, could not have checked them. Thus, O sovereign, in that night, after all had fallen asleep, this dreadful occurrence came to pass; and then, having wrought a slaughter of men, he brought about a great calamity for the Pāṇḍavas.
