Vaiśampāyana said: Then Śakra (Indra), making heaven and earth resound on every side, approached Pārtha (Yudhiṣṭhira) with his chariot and said to him, “Mount this chariot.” The moment frames a decisive ethical transition: the righteous king is invited to proceed onward, not by human power, but under divine summons that acknowledges steadfast dharma at life’s end.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse underscores that unwavering dharma is ultimately recognized and upheld by the cosmic order: the righteous person’s final passage is not merely personal achievement but a divinely affirmed culmination of ethical steadfastness.
After the preceding events of the great journey, Indra arrives with a chariot, filling heaven and earth with reverberation, and directly commands Yudhiṣṭhira (called Pārtha) to mount the chariot—initiating the next stage toward heaven.
