“O son of Pāṇḍu, all your hopes have borne fruit. In the midst of the elephant-corps, the monkey upon the crest of Arjuna’s chariot-banner is clearly visible. Behold the bowstring of Gāṇḍīva flashing like lightning emerging from a dark cloud. Perched atop Dhanañjaya’s banner, that mighty monkey scans all directions; in the clash of battle he terrifies the enemy hosts. Even I, seeing him with my own eyes, am struck with fear.”
The verse highlights how righteous strength is amplified by auspicious symbols and divine support: Arjuna’s prowess (Gāṇḍīva) and the presence of Hanumān on his banner become moral and psychological force, inspiring allies and unsettling adversaries—showing that dharma in war includes inner steadiness and the power of faith-backed resolve.
A speaker named Viśoka addresses a Pāṇḍava, pointing out Arjuna’s chariot in the elephant-filled battle line. He describes the monkey emblem atop Arjuna’s banner scanning the field and terrifying enemy troops, and compares the shining bowstring of Gāṇḍīva to lightning from a dark cloud, confessing that the sight itself causes fear.
