Krishna’s Counsel, Arjuna’s Apology, and Authorization for Karṇa’s Slaying
श्रूयन्ते विविधा राजन् नामान्युद्धिश्य भारत । भरतवंशी नरेश! उस समय नाम ले-लेकर गरजते हुए शूरवीरोंकी भाँति-भाँतिकी बातें अविच्छिन्न-रूपसे सुनायी पड़ती थीं
śrūyante vividhā rājan nāmāny uddiśya bhārata | bharatavaṃśī nareśa! usa samaya nāma le-lekara garjate hue śūravīroṃ kī bhānti-bhānti kī bāteṃ avicchinna-rūpa se sunāyī paṛtī thīṃ
Sanjaya said: “O King, O Bharata, many kinds of cries were heard—warriors calling out names as they roared. O ruler of the Bharata line, at that time the battlefield resounded continuously with varied shouts and exchanges, like the thunderous calls of heroes naming one another.”
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights the kṣatriya battlefield ethos: warriors openly identify and challenge one another by name, emphasizing courage, accountability, and the public nature of martial honor—while also underscoring the relentless, consuming atmosphere of war.
Sanjaya reports to the king that the field of battle is filled with continuous, varied sounds—heroes roaring and calling out names—conveying the intensity and unbroken momentum of the fighting.
