Sañjaya said: Having arrayed his own division of troops and relying on the strength of his own arms, Duryodhana fought for a long time together with the Pāṇḍavas, O Bhārata. (In context, as evening approached after prolonged and strenuous combat, he ordered the soldiers to withdraw to the camp.)

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the kṣatriya ideal of steadfastness and personal valor in battle, while also implying the practical ethics of command—knowing when to sustain combat and when to withdraw troops as conditions (such as the onset of evening) require.

Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Duryodhana, after arranging his forces, fought the Pāṇḍavas for a long time relying on his own strength; in the surrounding context, as dusk arrived he directed the army to return to the camp.
