Sañjaya said: Then, O king, a most wondrous battle arose between those two. It was like the great combat of old between the asura Śambara and the king of the gods, Indra—so extraordinary was their clash.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how epic narration uses mythic exemplars to frame human conflict: by comparing the warriors’ duel to Indra’s ancient battle with Śambara, it underscores the awe-inspiring scale of violence and the grave moral weight of war, where prowess can appear ‘wondrous’ even as it serves destructive ends.

Sañjaya reports to the king that an extraordinary fight has begun between two principal combatants (contextually, the pair under description in this section). He intensifies the scene by likening it to the famed primordial battle between the asura Śambara and Indra.
