Sañjaya said: “That heroic king Śrutāyudha was the son of Varuṇaka; his mother was the great river Parṇāśā, whose waters run cool.”

The verse foregrounds identity through lineage: a warrior’s public role in the war is framed by his origins—father and even a river-mother—reminding the listener that power and fame arise within a larger web of relationships and inherited circumstances.
Sañjaya introduces or identifies the warrior-king Śrutāyudha by giving his parentage: he is the son of Varuṇaka, and his mother is the great, cool-watered river Parṇāśā. This functions as a brief genealogical marker within the battle narrative.
